Coming
soon to the Brockley Jack Theatre
Coming soon in 2010 the Write Now festival, Moira Buffini's Blavatsky's Tower and The Faction's innovative revival of William Shakespeare's The Tempest.

Tuesday 16 February – Saturday 6 March
In September 2009 the Brockley Jack Studio Theatre invited playwrights with a connection to South East London to submit unperformed plays to the venue. The three plays which form our season were drawn from these submissions.
Playwright Lin Coghlan (Eastenders, The National Theatre, Soho Theatre) and award winning producer Simon James Collier, of the Okai Collier Theatre Company, helped to select the final plays for performance.
Compression
by Joy Wilkinson
directed by Jennifer Lunn
produced by Sam Hoyle
Go for a spacewalk in Piccadilly. Scubadive down the South Bank.
Think you're thinking about anything... except you.
Ever since he was born, a terrible gift has cut Robin off from those around him. Today that may change. This is Robin's last chance to propose to the woman he loves, but he has to get to Machu Picchu to do it. And how can he cross the world, when he can't even get out of his bedsit? Compression is a funny and moving new play about the voices in our heads that hold us back, and how one singular man talked them around.
Compression features Gareth Kennerley whose recent credits include: the title role in Faustus (Greenwich Theatre); Karl in Warhorse (National Theatre and West End); Under Milk Wood (Tricycle); St Joan (National Theatre) and Fiddler on The Roof (Sheffield Crucible and Savoy Theatre).
Joy Wilkinson: originally from Lancashire, Joy has lived in south London for 14 years, mostly in Deptford. Joy's plays include Now is the Time (Tricycle Theatre), The Sweet Science of Bruising (National Theatre Studio), Fair (Finborough Theatre, Trafalgar Studios & UK tour), Felt Effects (Verity Bargate Award winner, Theatre 503) and The Aquatic Ape (Edinburgh & New York). She also writes for radio and was a graduate of the BBC's first TV Writers' Academy.

Fighting
by Tom Green
directed by Kate Bannister
produced by Karl Swinyard
Will we fight back? Without any weapons. What are we going to do?
Throw stones? Call them names?
Two soldiers flee from an ambush in the middle of the night. They think it's just a military exercise but the arrival of a wounded colleague suggests that the fighting is for real. So who is behind it? And are they out there still, hunting them down? Fighting is a provocative new drama that compels us to question what we can rely on and whose account of the truth we should believe.
Tom Green: Tom's previous work includes: The Tent (Radio 4), The Death of Margaret Thatcher (Courtyard Theatre, London), Antigua (Tabard Theatre), Katherine (Finborough Theatre) and Inspector Otto (with Todd McNeal, National Youth Music Theatre). He is currently working on a new commission for Radio 4.

The Bitch From Brixton
by Kate Gallon and Kate-Lynn Hocking
directed by Mark Leipacher
produced by Darren Batten
It's obvious when I shot him I intended to kill him...
Open and shut cases are rarely what they seem. Ruth Ellis, the so-called 'Bitch from Brixton' is hanged after being found guilty of the murder of her lover. Yet beyond the tabloid controversy lurks a seedy underbelly of espionage, power and betrayal in 1950's London. Using court archives and biographical accounts, this thrilling new play offers Ruth Ellis a powerful and contemporary voice.
Kate Gallon: Kate lives in Herne Hill and works with words in a variety of mediums, including text messaging, book-making and micro-performance events. Her past works have been shown in Manchester, London and Berlin.
Kate-Lynn Hocking: Kate-Lynn trained as an actress. Her theatre credits include: The Solid Gold Cadillac, All My Sons, Playing for Time, One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, Romeo and Juliet. She has also appeared in Coronation Street, Island at War, Lost in Austin, Ghost Squad, The Royal Today and Doctors.

Blavatsky's Tower
by Moira Buffini
directed by Chris Loveless
On the twenty-fifth floor of a monstrous tower block Hector Blavatsky - visionary, architect and patriarch - dominates his family with God-like authority. Fearful of being tainted by the rest of humanity below ('the crushed') the Blavatskys are in full retreat from the world. But Hector is dying. And when an outsider arrives in their miniature universe the family must finally consider flying the nest and joining the crushed - but at what cost?
Moira Buffini's black comedy takes a wry look at that most dysfunctional of establishments: the family.
A refreshingly dizzying perspective on that cornerstone of dysfunction - the family. Time Out
A truly remarkable play. Buffini is a startlingly original voice and an outstanding talent. What's On
Chris Loveless is one of the fringe's busiest young directors. His productions have received widespread critical acclaim and established him as a director of challenging contemporary drama. Productions for 2010 include: Gifted, Stairway to Heaven, The Remains of the Day and Still Life.

Scratch at The Jack
Sunday 21 March at 6pm
A brand new night at The Jack, with quick-fire acts showcasing fresh new material.
March's line up:
End to End - winner of the 2009 Sitcom Trials
written and performed by Sam Pamphilon & Steve McNeil
The Ophelia Project
A celebration of women, performed by women. It draws upon romantic images of women such as Millais' Ophelia and other Pre-Raphaelite paintings to create movement. It is further influenced by the work of Lord Byron, Shakespeare and Edmund Spenser. The performance lies somewhere between live art and physical theatre and is clearly set within the natural world through the soundscape and movement. It celebrates the Pre-Raphaelite's glorification of the natural world and, as women, our relationship with Mother Nature.
An Ambulance In Traffic
A dark comedy duologue written by Paul Richards, directed by Christopher O'Donnell
Last Woman Standing
Post Apocalypse - Liz may be the last woman on earth. She has a lot to think about – men, survival and how, given her predicament, will she manage to be a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing… Or maybe Helen is the last woman left. Or possibly Beth… Last Woman Standing takes a jolly look inside the minds of women who are given to conversing with hair straighteners… A character comedy written and performed by Rosin Rae (of sketch comedy group Rule of Three)
Allnutt & Simpson - back by popular demand trying out some brand new sketch comedy
